Do You Avoid Conflict?

Leading a business always means dealing with problems and undertaking difficult tasks. Its natural to feel some anxiety or fear about hurting someone’s feelings or disagreeing with another’s point-of-view, but if you avoid difficult and unpleasant tasks then you are allowing negative information and negative relationships to fester and increase tensions.

What’s wrong with that?

If you avoid conflict and say yes to things that you often wouldn’t in order to spare someone else’s feelings, or through a fear that you might lose your connection with them, then this avoidance leads to relationships being kept at a superficial level. You might consider yourself a good person, or see yourself as being flexible by avoiding conflict, but someone needs to confront negativity - and as a business leader - this should be you.

By denying or downplaying the conflicts and negatives that do exist in all our workplaces, you are preventing your colleagues from working through them and turning them into positives for you all.

When you harvest all the negative information yourself, trust levels with others may be reduced, as others will be unsure when you are withholding information or not and your own suppressed anger and resentment will build up, leading to passive-aggressive responses, rather than calm and direct solutions.

What is avoided doesn’t go away and festers.
